Directions to The Barnet Mat Room / Studio
Studio 4B,
Barnet Business Centre
Alston Works
Alston Road or Falkland Road (there are 2 entrances into the site)

Hi Guys,

The Barnet Studio / Mat Room is situated a few streets behind The Spires Shopping Centre which is in Barnet High Street.

By Underground

It’s a 15 minute walk from High Barnet Underground Station (on the Barnet Branch of the Northern Line). You can also get to it easily from Arnos Grove underground station (on the Piccadilly line). From Arnos Grove underground station, take a number 34 bus to the church in Barnet High Street and follow the directions below.

From Barnet underground station: come out of the underground station walk up the hill and turn right at the top into Barnet High Street. Continue up the hill until you see the Church of St John the Baptist. Take the right hand fork (signpost St Albans).

Continue forward (past McDonalds on the right hand side). A little further on take a left turn into Salisbury Road (cross over the junction with Staplyton Road) and then right into Alston Road. Walk on through the width restriction part of the road. Almost at the end of Alston Road, turn left into Falkland Road (this is slightly longer route but for your first visit will make finding the studio much easier).

Half way down Falkland Road on the left hand side (next to house number 37) you will see an open entrance into a large yard. This takes you into Alston Works which is a large old rambling Victorian Industrial site. You will see signs to BMERC which is a garage on the site. There are usually lots of cars parked in the yard. You will see signs on the wall for BMERC Walk into the yard and Studio 4B is in the far corner. Look for white painted metal shutter doors. It’s a single story unit.

Alternatively, You might prefer to walk on a little further than Salisbury Road and cut through the Spires Shopping Centre. It has a Waitrose and a Costa. You will come out at the back of the Spires Shopping Centre facing the library in Stapylton Road . Turn right then left into Strafford Road. At the top of Strafford Road turn right into Alston Road. Walk through where the road narrows then follow the directions above to get into Alston Works.

Alston works is a fairly spread out old Victorian Industrial site (you'll see an old orange metal gate propped against the wall and a temporary advertising sign high up on a wall advertising a company that designs websites etc. also, signs to a gym which is on the same site).

Whend your way through the site, turn left at the collection of post boxes, cross the first yard and then turn right at the row of white office units (ignore no 4), head under the iron staircase and the studio is straight ahead) I am at the back part of the site in a single story unit. It has large solid metal shutters and it’s clearly marked Studio 4B.

By Train

Another way of getting to the studio is on the overground train from Kings Cross to New Barnet and then take a bus. Please check with Transport For London (TFL).

If you are driving from Central London, once you arrive in Barnet High Street pass Salisbury Rd and the Spires Shopping Centre and bear left at the traffic lights (next to Kentucky Fried Chicken shop). Drive down St Albans Road a couple of hundred yards, turn left into Alston Road and a fairly sharpish right into Falkland Rd. Alston Works is on your left.
If you are arriving by car travelling via the M25

Leave the M25 at junction 23 (South Mimms Services / A1 / Barnet). Follow the roundabout until you come to the A1 South exit which is also marked Barnet (don’t go on to the A1). Take the Barnet route (A1081 – St Albans Road) and follow it for approx 1 mile thenGo straight on at the mini roundabout for a further 1.5 miles. When you get to the built up area, take the turning on the right into Wrotham Road. At the bottom of Wrotham Road (only 100 metres) turn left into Falkland Road. A few metres on the right you will see an opening (next to 37 Falkland Road). Go into the main yard (it may be packed with cars) diagonally opposite, you will see my unit 4B (the furthest away from the entrance.

Parking on the site has become very difficult since the BMERC Garage opened. If you are lucky you might get a space. You can park anywhere there is a space as long as you don’t block any doorways. There are pay by phone meters in the surrounding roads but I would suggest that you park in St Albans Road. It’s a bit of a walk but there if free unrestricted parking. Look for the London Shires Golf Club.

New Information if you are using a Sat Nav Some guys have been having difficulty finding the studio with their Sat Navs (the studio is in the middle of a Victorian workshop area). Try typing EN5 4LG into your Sat Nav. This will bring you to 35/ 37 Falklands Road which is right next to the back entrance of Alston Works. Studio 4b is right in the corner of the yard.
